Burford is unique in having 262 listed buildings, the High Street having the highest percentage of listed properties in the country, two Grade 1 listed buildings and all within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Conservation Area

A proposal is on the table for 70 houses along Sheep Street, which includes a car and coach park, as part of the WODC's Local Plan. This Sheep Street development, situated in the Cotswold National Landscape, poses a threat to an ancient field significant for its historical value as the site of the Battle between the kings of Wessex and Mercia, which is honored by the Dragon Procession. The Burford housing plans will only worsen existing Burford traffic problems, potentially leading to a fourfold increase in the number of houses on Sheep Street, thereby escalating traffic congestion. If this proposal is approved, it could also prompt a review of the Cole's Field development in east Burford, further endangering efforts to protect Burford heritage.
